Chapter 9:17-29 Jesus healed a man’s son who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.

A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.” “O unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “How long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.” (Mark9:17-19)

Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this!” “From childhood,” He answered. It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” (Mark9:21-22)

“If you can?” said Jesus, “Everything is possible for him who believes.” (Mark 9:23). Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (v.24)

When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit” He said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” (v.25)

The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out… Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.(vv26,27)

His disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” Jesus replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”(vv.28-29).

Verse 29 this kind. This kind of demon can be conquered only by prayer; some manuscripts add the words, and fasting, which means some sickness request us fasting prayer, so the person can be healed.

Chapter 10 Jesus’ preaching concerning divorce10:1-12

Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.(v.1)

Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” What did Moses command you? He replied. They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.” (vv.2-4)

“It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied, “But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the tow will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one.  What God has joined together, let man not separate. (Mark 10:5-9) Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery. (Mark10:11)

Jesus’ teaching on divorce (cf 1Cor.7:10-11) unveiled in Matt.19:3-9; Mark10:2-12 and Luke16:18. It is disallowed except for unfaithfulness, which may mean (1) adultery, (2) unfaithfulness during the period of betrothal (Matt.1:19) or (3) marriage between near relatives (Lev.18). Male and female (Gen.2:21-25) it presupposes and enjoins monogamy. The Mosaic law concerning divorce was a concession to the people, not a part of God’s original purpose. Moses assigned this law not according to God’s ordination form the beginning but as something temporary, because of the hardness of man’s heart.

The Lord’s word not only acknowledged God’s creation of man but also confirmed God’s ordination regarding man’s marriage. That is, one male and one female are to be joined and yoked together as one flesh and are not to be separated by man. For the kingdom of the heavens Christ as the heavenly King recovered marriage back to the beginning. This indicates that the kingdom of the heavens, which corresponds with God’s ordination from the beginning, does not allow divorce.

Jesus’ word indicates definitely that nothing but fornication breaks the marriage tie. (Of course, death breaks it spontaneously). Hence, except for fornication there is no excuse for divorce. Marriage is the strictest bond. Once a person is married, he is fully bound, having no way to be released except through the committing of fornication by the spouse (or through the death of the spouse).

Concerning eternal life (Mark10:17-31)

A man ran up to Jesus and fell on his knees before him, “good teacher” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. “No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.” (vv.17-19)

Teacher, he declared, “All these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said, “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven then come, follow me.” (vv.20-21). At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How heard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” (vv.22-23) …

With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. (Mark.10:27) “I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first. (Mark10:29-31)

Verse 21, Jesus Christ was trying to show the man that, in reality, his love of money violated the law and made him a sinner.

Chapter 11 Triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Sunday

My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations. (Mark11:17)

Jesus answered, “Have faith in God, I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, “go, throw yourself into the sea,” and does not doubt in his heart but believes what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark11:22-24)And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.(Mark11:25)
