Chapter 12 Concerning the Jewish nation
Chapter 12:1-12
this parable, addressed to the obdurate religious leaders of Israel, illustrates
God’s dealings with that people. The man (v.1) is God. The vineyard (v.1) is
Israel. The servants (vv.2-5) are the O.T. prophets and John the Baptist. The
son whom they killed is Jesus (vv.6-8). The prediction of the destruction of
the vine-growers (v.9) was fulfilled when Jerusalem was destroyed in A.D.70.
He
then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard.
He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower.
Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. At
harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of
the fruit of the vineyard. But they seized him, beat him and sent him away
empty-hand. The he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the
head and treated him shamefully. He sent still another and that one they
killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat others they killed. He had
one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, “They
will respect my son.” (Mark12:1-6)
But
the tenants said to one another, “This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and
the inheritance will be ours.”So they took him and killed him, and threw him
out of the vineyard. What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come
and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. Haven’t you read this
scripture?
“The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone.
The Lord has done this, and it is
marvelous in our eyes”?
Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they
knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd;
so they left him and went away. (v.12)
The Jewish leaders as the builders of God’s building
rejected the Salve-Savior, who was the stone that became the head of the corner
of the building of God (v.10). Because of this, God rejected them and gave His
building work to others –the church. In this Gospel this is the only direct
indication regarding the church. The corner of the church as God’s building
(Eph.2:20). This is an indirect reference to the church.
Concerning taxes, 12:13-17
Later they sent some of the Pharisees and
Herodias to Jesus to catch him in his words. They came to him and said,
“Teacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by men, because
you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in
accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we
pay or shouldn’t we? But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why
are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring
me a denarius and let me look at it.” they
brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And
whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then
Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s” and they were amazed at him.(vv.13-17)
Concerning resurrection, 12:18-27
Then
the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question.
“Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and
leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children
for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died
without leaving any children. The second one married the widow, but he also
died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. In fact, none of the
seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. At
the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?
Jesus replied, “Are you
not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? When
the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be
like the angels in heaven. Now about the dead rising-have you not read in the
book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, “ I am the God
of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”?He is not the God of the
dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken! (Mark12:18-27)
Jesus
mentioned in verse 25 “like the angels” in
the resurrection state there will be no conjugal union (relating to marriage or
the relation of a marriage couple) or reproduction of children, for they will
be like the angels in heaven.
Knowing
the Scriptures is one thing; knowing the power of God is another. We need to
know both. The Scriptures here refer to the Old Testament verses that concern
the matter of resurrection, and the power of God refers to the power of
resurrection. As God is the God of the living and is called “The God of Abraham
and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob,” so the dead Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob will be resurrected. This is the way the Lord Jesus expounded the
Scriptures-not only according to the letter but also according to the life and
power implied within him.
Mark Chapter 13 concerning the future
As he was leaving
the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look Teacher! What massive
stones! What magnificent building!” “Do you see all these great buildings? Replied Jesus. “Not one
stone here will be left on anther; everyone will be thrown down.” (Mark13:1-2)
As Jesus was
sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and
Andrew asked him privately, “Tell
us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all
about to be fulfilled?” (vv.3-4)
Herod the Great began the building of this Temple in 20
B.C. and it was finished in A.D.64. The stones, 10-12 feet in length, would
have been plainly visible.
The Mount of
Olives, just E. of Jerusalem across the Kindred
Valley. In this discourse Jesus answered two of the three questions the
disciples asked. He does not answer “when will these things happen?” He answers “what
will be the sign of your coming?” And He speaks of the signs of the end of the
age and list characteristics of the first half of the tribulation period, while
vv.24-26 deal with the second half.
Verse 1 In His preparation for His redemptive work, after
confronting the opposers the Slave-Savior stayed with His followers to prepare
them for His death, an unexpected event that would shock and disappoint them,
by (1) telling them the things that would come; (2)enjoying their love,
expressed in a feast, and being anointed with costly, pure nard; (3)
instituting His supper that they might remember Him; and (4) warning them that
they would stumble and charging them to watch and pray. Immediately after such
a preparation, He was arrested to be crucified.
Verse 2in preparing the disciples for His death, Jesus in
this chapter told them first the things to come, the things that would take
place in the world during the church age, from His resurrection to His coming
back. Concerning the days to come, He did not leave them in darkness; rather,
He told them
(1) Concerning the destruction of the temple, which would
occur in A.D.70 (vv.1-2).
(2) Concerning the plagues at the beginning of birth
pangs, which would begin after His ascension and continue until the great tribulation.
(vv.3-8).
(3) Concerning the preaching of the gospel and the
persecutions in the church age (vv.9-13);
(4) Concerning the great tribulation and His second
coming, both of which will take place in the last three and a half years of
this age(vv.28-37).To the Slave –Savior’s suffering followers, such an
enlightening word was like “ a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day
dawn” (2 Pet.1:19).
“And the gospel must
first be preached to all nations. (v.10)
But in those days,
following that distress, “The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give
its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be
shaken.(v.24-25).
At that time men will
see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will
send his angels and gather his elect form the four winds, from the ends of the
earth to the ends of the heaven. (v.26-27)
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. (v.31)
Therefore, keep watch
because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back-whether in
the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes
suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to
everyone: WATCH. (vv.35-36)
