1Kings chapter 14 Jeroboam’s son became ill and Ahijah’s prophecy
The reign of Jeroboam in Israel
(931-910), at that time his son Abijah became ill, Jeroboam told his wife to
ask the prophet Ahijah about his son, the Lord
instructed Ahijah to answer her, “ go, tell Jeroboam that this is what
the Lord, the God of Israel, says, “I
raised you up from among the people and made you a leader over my my people
Israel. I tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you, but
you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commands and followed me
with all his heart…you have done more evil than all who lived before you. You
have made for yourself other gods, idols made of metal; you have provoked me to
anger and thrust me behind your back. Because of this, I am going to bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam. I will cut off from Jeroboam every last male
in Israel slave or free…..Dogs will eat those belonging to Jeroboam who die in
the city, and the birds of the air will feed on those who die in the country.
(vv.7-11). Only the sick so Abijah, of all the male descendants of
Jeroboam, would be buried; the others would suffer the indignity of having
their bodies devoured by scavengers. When Jeroboam’s wife backed and stepped
over the threshold of the house, the boy died. They buried him and all Israel
mourned for him. (v.17-18) Jeroboam reigned for twenty-two years and then
rested with his fathers and Nadab his son succeeded him as king.
The
reign of Rehoboam in Judah (931-913). Rehoboam son of Solomon was king in Judah.
He was forty one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years
in Jerusalem, the city the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel in
which to put his Name. There was continual warfare between Rehoboam and
Jeroboam. And Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the
City of David. Abijah his son succeeded him as king.
1 Kings 15 The Reign of Abijah , Asa in Judah and Reign of Nadab in
Israel
In the eighteenth year of the reign
of Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijah became king of Judah, and he reigned in
Jerusalem three years. The Abijah of 2 Chron.13:1, who reigned 913-911 and was
the son of Maacah, who was the granddaughter of Abishalom (=Absalom) whose
daughter Tamar married Uriel. There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. Abijah
rest with his father and was buried in the City of David. Asa his son succeeded
him as king.(vv.6-8). In the
twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah, he reigned
in Jerusalem forty-one years. Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord,
he expelled the male shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the
idols his fathers had made. He even deposed his grandmother Maacah from her
position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive Asherah
pole(vv.11-13). Ash’s war with Baasha (vv.18-20) to take the pressure off
Baasha’s encroachment on Judah(by building Ramah), Asa entered into a foreign
alliance with Aram(Syria), who, in turn, attacked towns in the Galilee area,
causing Israel to stop fortifying Ramah.
The reign of Nadab in Israel (910-909). Nadab
son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah,
and he reigned over Israel two year. (v.25). He did evil in the eyes of the
Lord. Baasha son of Ahijah of the house of Issachar plotted against him, and
killed him. Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah and
succeeded him as king. As soon as he began to reign, he killed Jeroboam’s whole
family. He did not leave Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all,
according to the word of the Lord given through his servant Ahijah the
Shilonited because of the sins Jeroboam had commit and provoked the Lord, the
God of Israel, to anger.(vv.27-30).
The
Reign of Baasha in Israel (909-886). In the third year of Ash king Judah,
Baasha son of Ahijah became king of all Israel in Tirzah, ad he reigned twenty
–four years. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, walking in the ways of Jeroboam
.
1 Kings Chapter 16 Reign of Elah, Zimri, Omri, Ahab in Israel
Since Baasha chose to live in sin like Jeroboam, he
would suffer the same ignominious fate of Jeroboam’s family
(vv.11-12;14:10-13). Two dynasties (Jeroboam’s and Baasha’s) had risen and
fallen in Israel in forty-six years(v.12).
The reign of Elah in Israel (886-885). The reign of Zimri in Israel
(885). Zimri’s lasted only seven days
(v.15). The reign of Omri in Israel (885-874). Omri is remembered for two
things: he built Samaria, making it the capital and giving its name to the
entire Northern Kingdom; and he became the most wicked king up to that time,
though his son Ahab outdid him (v.33).Samaria, located about seven miles NW. of
Shechem, became the center of idolatrous worship(16:32;HOs.8:5-6;Amos3:12-15;6:1-6;Mic.1:5-7).
It fell to the Assyrians in 722 (2Kings 17:5). The Reign of Ahab in Israel
(874-853). Ahab (vv.29-31) is remembered for two things: his wickedness and his
marriage to Jezebel, who advanced Baal whorship into Israel. Asherah (v.33).
The chief goddess of Tyre, and mother of Baal (Deut.7:5;Jer17:2). In Ahab’s
time, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundations at the cost of
his firstborn son Abiram and he set up its gates at the cost of his youngest
son Segub. (v.34). Hiel tried to defy God’s curse on anyone who fortified
Jericho (the setting up of gates showed that this was his intention) with the
result that his tow sons died (either by being sacrificed in the process of
building, or by direct divine judgment on them).
1 Kings Chapter 17 Elijah’s prediction of drought, provision, and raised
a boy from dead
Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said
to Ahab, “ As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be
neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.”(v.1). Elijah means “Yahweh is
God”, a significant name in a time when Baal worship threatened to extinguish
the worship of Yahweh in Israel. The
famine had extended this far north, and the widow was preparing her last meal.
The oath shows that she worshiped the God of Israel. God sent Elijah to a
Gentile widow to rebuke the apostasy of Israel (Luke4:24-26). Elijah said to
her, “ Don’t be afraid. Go
home and do as you have said. But first
make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and
then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the
God of Israel says, “ The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of
oil will not run dry until the day of the Lord gives rain on the land.(vv.13-14).
She did as Elijah said. So there was food every day
for Elijah and for the woman and her family. Some time later, the her son was
dead. The mother thought her son had died because of some sin she had
committed.(v.18). Then Elijah stretched himself out on the the boy three times
and cried to the Lord, “
O Lord may God, let this boy’s life return to him.” (v.21). The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s
life returned to him and he lived. He
gave him to his mother. Then the woman said, “
Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your
mouth is the truth.”(v.24).
