Romans Chapter 4 :1-25 (NIV)
Abraham Justified by
Faith Abraham’s faith was apart from
works.
4:1 What then shall we
say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter?
4:2 If, in fact,
Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about--but not before
God.
4:3 What does the
Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as
righteousness."
4:4 Now when a man
works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation.
4:5 However, to the
man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is
credited as righteousness.
4:6 David says the
same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits
righteousness apart from works:
4:7 "Blessed are
they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
4:8 Blessed is the man
whose sin the Lord will never count against him."
4:9 Is this
blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We have
been saying that Abraham's faith was credited to him as righteousness.
4:10 Under what
circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It
was not after, but before!
4:11 And he received
the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith
while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe
but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to
them.
4:12 And he is also the
father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also walk in the
footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
4:13 It was not
through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be
heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
4:14 For if those who
live by law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless,
4:15 because law
brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.
4:16 Therefore, the
promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all
Abraham's offspring--not only to those who are of the law but also to those who
are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.
4:17 As it is written:
"I have made you a father of many nations." He is our father in the
sight of God, in whom he believed--the God who gives life to the dead and calls
things that are not as though they were.
4:18 Against all hope,
Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it
had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
4:19 Without weakening
in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was
about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb was also dead.
4:21 being fully
persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
4:22 This is why
"it was credited to him as righteousness."
4:23 The words
"it was credited to him" were written not for him alone,
4:24 but also for us,
to whom God will credit righteousness--for us who believe in him who raised
Jesus our Lord from the dead.
4:25 He was delivered
over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
In verse 4 “Now when a man works,
his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation or “now to the
one who works, his wages are not accounted according to grace, but according to
what is due.” The natural man always works for God in order
to receive compensation (wages). With the natural man there is no grace, faith,
or enjoyment (Exo.12:45) God’s justification is not a reward (wages) for our good
works (labor); it is grace freely given to us through Christ’s redemption. If
God’s justification were based on our good works, or if it required our good
works, then, it would be the wages we earn for our good works; that is, it
would be something owed to us, not something freely given by God. Since God’s
justification is reckoned according to His grace, it is no longer out of works;
otherwise, grace is no longer grace (11:6). Our works can by no means replace
God’s grace; God’s grace must be absolute.
『這樣,我們可說我們的祖宗亞伯拉罕照著肉體得了甚麼?』羅四1『倘若亞伯拉罕是本於行為得稱義,就有可誇的,只是在神面前並無可誇。』羅四2 『原來經上說甚麼?說,“亞伯拉罕信神,這就算為他的義。”』羅四3
『作工的得工價,不是照著恩典,乃是照著所該得者算的。』羅四4惟有不作工,只信靠那稱不虔者為義之神的,他的信就算為他的義。』羅四5『正如大衛也稱那在行為以外,蒙神算為義的人為有福的:』羅四6
『“不法得赦免,罪得遮蓋的人,是有福的。』羅四7『主絕不算為有罪的人,是有福的。”』羅四8『如此,這稱為有福的福是單加給受割禮的人,還是也加給未受割禮的人?因我們說,亞伯拉罕的信,就算為他的義,』羅四9
『是怎麼算的?是在他受割禮的時候,還是在他未受割禮的時候?不是在受割禮的時候,乃是在未受割禮的時候。』羅四10『並且他受了割禮的記號,作他未受割禮時那信之義的印記,叫他作一切未受割禮而信之人的父,使他們也算為義;』羅四11『又作受割禮之人的父,就是那些不但受割禮,並且照我們祖宗亞伯拉罕,未受割禮時之信的腳蹤而行的人。』羅四12『因為神應許亞伯拉罕,或他的後裔,必得承受世界,不是藉著律法,乃是藉著信的義。』羅四13『若是本於律法的,纔得為後嗣,信就成了虛空,應許也就失效了。』羅四14『因為律法是惹動忿怒的;那裏沒有律法,那裏就沒有過犯。』羅四15『所以人得為後嗣是本於信,為要照著恩,使應許定然歸給一切後裔,不但歸給那本於律法的,也歸給那本於亞伯拉罕之信的。』羅四16『亞伯拉罕在他所信那叫死人復活,又稱無為有的神面前,是我們眾人的父,如經上所記:“我已經立你作多國的父。”』羅四17『他在無可指望的時候,仍靠指望而信,就得以照先前所說,“你的後裔將要如此”的話,作多國的父。』羅四18『他將近百歲的時候,雖然想到自己的身體如同已死,撒拉的生育也已斷絕,他的信還是不軟弱,』羅四19『總沒有因不信而疑惑神的應許,反倒因信得著加力,將榮耀歸與神,』羅四20『且滿心確信,神所應許的,祂也必能作成;』羅四21『所以這就算為他的義。』羅四22
『算為他的義這句話,不是單為他寫的,』羅四23『也是為我們將來得算為義的人,就是為我們這些信靠那使我們的主耶穌從死人中復活者的人寫的。』羅四24『耶穌被交給人是為我們的過犯,復活是為我們的稱義。』羅四25
5:2 through whom we
have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we
rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
5:3 Not only so, but
we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces
perseverance;
5:4 perseverance,
character; and character, hope.
5:5 And hope does not
disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy
Spirit, whom he has given us.
5:6 You see, at just
the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
5:7 Very rarely will
anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly
dare to die.
5:8 But God
demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ
died for us.
5:9 Since we have now
been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath
through him!
5:10 For if, when we
were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how
much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
5:11 Not only is this
so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we
have now received reconciliation.
Death Through Adam,
Life Through Christ
5:12 Therefore, just
as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this
way death came to all men, because all sinned--
5:13 for before the
law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when
there is no law.
5:14 Nevertheless,
death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who
did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to
come.
5:15 But the gift is
not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how
much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man,
Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!
5:16 Again, the gift
of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one
sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought
justification.
5:17 For if, by the
trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will
those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of
righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.
5:18 Consequently,
just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the
result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all
men.
5:19 For just as
through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also
through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
5:20 The law was added
so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased
all the more,
5:21 so that, just as
sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring
eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
『所以,我們既本於信得稱義,就藉著我們的主耶穌基督,對神有了和平。』羅五1『我們又藉著祂,因信得進入現在所站的這恩典中,並且因盼望神的榮耀而誇耀。』羅五2『不但如此,就是在患難中,我們也是誇耀,因為知道患難生忍耐,』羅五3『忍耐生老練,老練生盼望,』羅五4『盼望不至於蒙羞;因為神的愛已經藉著所賜給我們的聖靈,澆灌在我們心裏。』羅五5『因我們還軟弱的時候,基督就照所定的時期為不虔者死了。』羅五6『為義人死,是少有的;為仁人死,或者有敢作的;』羅五7『惟有基督在我們還作罪人的時候,為我們死,神就在此將祂自己的愛向我們顯明了。』羅五8『現在我們既因祂的血得稱義,就更要藉著祂得救脫離忿怒。』羅五9『因為我們作仇敵的時候,且藉著神兒子的死得與神和好,既已和好,就更要在祂的生命裏得救了。』羅五10『不但如此,我們現今既藉著我們的主耶穌基督,得與神和好,也就要藉著祂,在神裏面誇耀著,在祂的生命裏得救了。』羅五11『這就如罪是藉著一人入了世界,死又是藉著罪來的,於是死就遍及眾人,因為眾人都犯了罪。』羅五12『沒有律法之先,罪已經在世上;但沒有律法,罪也不算在賬上。』羅五13『然而從亞當到摩西,死就作了王,連那些不照亞當過犯樣式犯罪的,也在它的權下;亞當乃是那以後要來者的豫像。』羅五14『只是過犯不如恩賜;若因一人的過犯,多人都死了,神的恩典,與耶穌基督一人恩典中白白的恩賜,就更加洋溢的臨到多人。』羅五15『並且一人犯罪的結果,也不如白白的恩賜;因為審判是由於一次過犯而定罪,恩賜乃是由於許多過犯而稱義。』羅五16『若因一人的過犯,死就藉著這一人作了王,那些受洋溢之恩,並洋溢之義恩賜的,就更要藉著耶穌基督一人,在生命中作王了。』羅五17『如此說來,藉著一次的過犯,眾人都被定罪,照樣,藉著一次的義行,眾人也都被稱義得生命了。』羅五18藉著一人的悖逆,多人構成了罪人,照樣,藉著一人的順從,多人也要構成義的了。』羅五19律法插進來,是叫過犯增多,只是罪在那裏增多,恩典就更洋溢了,』羅五20『使罪怎樣在死中作王,恩典也照樣藉著義作王,叫人藉著我們的主耶穌基督得永遠的生命。』羅五21
Chapter
6:1-23 Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ
6:1 What shall we say,
then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?
6:2 By no means! We
died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
6:3 Or don't you know
that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his
death?
6:4 We were therefore
buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was
raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new
life.
6:5 If we have been
united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with
him in his resurrection.
6:6 For we know that
our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away
with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin--
6:7 because anyone who
has died has been freed from sin.
6:8 Now if we died with
Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
6:9 For we know that
since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has
mastery over him.
6:10 The death he
died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
6:11 In the same way,
count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
6:12 Therefore do not
let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
6:13 Do not offer the
parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer
yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer
the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.
6:14 For sin shall not
be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
Slaves to
Righteousness
6:15 What then? Shall
we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
6:16 Don't you know
that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves
to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death,
or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
6:17 But thanks be to
God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the
form of teaching to which you were entrusted.
6:18 You have been set
free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
6:19 I put this in
human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to
offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing
wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.
6:20 When you were
slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.
6:21 What benefit did
you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things
result in death!
6:22 But now that you
have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap
leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
6:23 For the wages of
sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans Chapter 7:1-25 Released From the Law, Bound to Christ
7:1 Do you not know,
brothers--for I am speaking to men who know the law--that the law has authority
over a man only as long as he lives?
7:2 For example, by
law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her
husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
7:3 So then, if she marries
another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But
if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress,
even though she marries another man.
7:4 So, my brothers,
you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to
another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit
to God.
7:5 For when we were
controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at
work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death.
7:6 But now, by dying
to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in
the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
The Law and Sin
7:7 What shall we say,
then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was
except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if
the law had not said, "Do not covet."
7:8 But sin, seizing
the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of
covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead.
7:9 Once I was alive
apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.
7:10 I found that the
very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.
7:11 For sin, seizing
the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the
commandment put me to death.
7:12 So then, the law
is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.
7:13 Did that which is
good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be
recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that
through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
7:14 We know that the
law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.
7:15 I do not
understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
7:16 And if I do what
I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.
7:17 As it is, it is
no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.
7:18 I know that
nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire
to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
7:19 For what I do is
not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on
doing.
7:20 Now if I do what
I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me
that does it.
7:21 So I find this
law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
7:22 For in my inner
being I delight in God's law;
7:23 but I see another
law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind
and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.
7:24 What a wretched
man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
7:25 Thanks be to God--through
Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law,
but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
