Psalm 19 In this hymn of praise, David reflects on the glory of God in natural revelation(vv.1-6) and the glory of the law as God’s special revelation (vv.7-9), which alone meets man’s spiritual needs (vv.10-14) Day and night the created universe broadcasts its silent but eloquent symphony to the glory of the Creator. Verses 7-9 a skinfold description of God’s special revelation. Law. I.e. His revealed will. Statutes. His truth. Precepts. I.e., particular injunctions. Commands. Authoritative words. Fear. I.e., reverential trust that God’s words foster in His people. Ordinances. I.e., decisions relating to human situations.
Psalm 19 a psalm of David.
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they deeply knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat. (vv.1-6)
By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. (vv.11-13).
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock, and my Redeemer. (v.14).
Psalm 20 In this royal psalm, David relays the people’s prayer for his victory in battle (vv.1-5), rehearses his own trust in God for victory (vv.6-8), and reiterates the people’s prayer to the Lord, their king (v.9). Throughout these verses you refers to the anointed king(v.6).
Psalm 20 1-9 A psalm of David
May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;
May the name of the God of Jacob protect you. (v.1).
May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion. (v.2).
May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings. (v.3).
May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.(v.4).
Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed; he answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of his right hand. (v.6).
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. (v.7)
They are brought to their knees and fall but we rise up and stand firm. O Lord, save the king! Answer us when we call.(vv.8-9).
Psalm 21 In this royal thanksgiving psalm, David acknowledges that God has established his kingdom (vv.1-7), rehearses the people’s anticipation of his further success as their king (vv.8-12), and records their praise to the Lord(v.13). The psalm is partly messianic (vv.4-6, 10-12), the language of these verses being hyperbolic in relation to David, but literally true of Christ. Verse 7 unfailing love. Heb., hesed (Hos.2:19). The Most High. Heb. Elyon; (Gen.14:18). Verse 8 lay hold. In the sense of “overthrow”. The king trusts in the Lord; through the unfailing love of the Most High, he will not be shaken, for the Lord’s hand will overthrow all His enemies and his right hand will seize his foes.
Psalm 21:1-13 A psalm of David
O Lord, the king rejoice in your strength. How great is his joy in the victories you give! You have granted him the desire of his heart and have not withheld the request of his lips. You welcomed him with rich blessings and placed a crown of pure gold on his head. (vv.1-3).
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him length of days, for ever and ever. Through the victories you gave, his glory is great; you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty. Surely you have granted him eternal blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence. (vv.4-6).
For the king trusts in the Lord; through the unfailing love of the Most High he will not be shaken. (v.7).
You will destroy their descendants from the earth, their posterity from mankind. Though they plot evil against you and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed; for you will make them turn their backs when you aim at them with drawn bow.(vv.10-12).
Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength; we will sing and praise your might. (v.13).
