Psalm 97 This hymn of God’s kingship opens with a call for all the earth to rejoice at the the establishment of the kingdom of the Lord(v.1), whose presence is described in theophany0like language (vv.2-6); describes the effects of His kingdom in relation to the wicked(v.7) and the righteous (vv.8-9); and concludes with an exhortation to hate evil and praise the Lord(vv.10-12).

 Psalm 97:1-12

The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice. Clouds and thick darkness surround; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. (vv.1-2).

Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. (vv.3-4).

The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory. All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols worship him, all you gods! (vv.5-7).

Zion hears and rejoices and the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments, O Lord. For you, O Lord, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.(vv.8-9).

Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name. (vv.10-12).

Psalm 98 This hymn praises God as deliverer (vv.1-3), as King (vv.4-6), and as Ruler (vv.7-9). His covenant faithfulness. Nature will rejoice in its release when Christ rules in His millennial kingdom.

Psalm 98:1-9

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation for him. (vv.1).

The Lord has made His salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. He has remembered His love and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. (v.2-3).

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with harp, with the harp and the sound of singing. With trumpets and the blast of the rams' horn –shout for joy before the Lord, the King. (vv.4-6).

Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity. (vv.7-9).

Psalm 99 This hymn of God’s kingship contains three stanzas: the declaration of the majesty of God (v.1-3), the description of the rule of God(vv.4-5), and the dealings with Israel of the God who is holy(vv.6-7). The psalm views God’s reign over Israel in O.T. times, as well as the future millennial reign of Christ.

Psalm 99:1-9

The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble; He sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. Great is the Lord in Zion; He is exalted over all the nations. Let them praise your great and awesome name- He is holy. (vv.1-3).

The King is mighty, He loves justice—you have established equity; in Jacob you have done what is just and right. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool; He is holy. (vv.4-5).

Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel was among those who called on his name; they called on the Lord and he answered them. He spoke to them form the pillar of cloud; they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them. (vv.6-7).

O Lord our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy. (vv.8-9).
