Psalm 85 A psalm of the Sons of Korah. Written during some setback in the fortunes
of the nation, this psalm recalls the deeds of God is the past (vv.1-3),
reflects on the distress of the present (vv.4-7), and reassures concerning
deliverance in the future(vv.8-13). Verses 9-11 when the glory (presence ) of
God reigns in the land, the people will experience the characteristics of
verses 10-11(fully so in the Millennium).
Psalm 85 : 1-13
You
showed favor to your land, O Lord; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. You
forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins. (vv.1-2).
You set aside all your wrath and turned from your fierce anger. Restore
us again, O God our Savior, and put away your displeasure toward us. Will you
be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger through all generations?
Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?(vv.3-6).
Surely His salvation is
near those who fear him, that His glory may dwell in our land. Love and
faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other. (vv.9-10).
Faithfulness
springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. The
Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest.
Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps. (vv.11-13).
Psalm 86 A psalm of David. This
is the only psalm of David in Book III. This prayer opens (vv.1-7) and closes
(vv.14-17) with petitions surrounding a section of adoration and thanksgiving
(vv.8-15). Verses 2-15 devoted. I.e., a loyal member of the people who enjoy
God’s covenant relationship and enjoy His love (vv.5,13,15; Heb., hesed, see
note on Hos.2:19).
Psalm 86:1-17
Hear,
O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Guard my life, for I am devoted
to you. You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you. Have mercy on me,
O Lord, for I call to you all day long. (vv.1-3).
Among
the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours. All
the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord; they will
bring glory to your name. (vv.8-9)
Turn
to me and have mercy on me; grant your strength to your servant and save the
son of your maidservant. Give me a sign of your goodness, that my enemies may
see it and be put to shame, for you, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me.
(vv.16-17).
Psalm 87 A psalm of the Sons
of Korah. In this psalm of praise of Jerusalem, the psalmist describes the
glories of Zion(vv.1-3), the nations and Zion (vv.4-6), and the joy in Zion
(v.7). verses 1-3 God founded Zion (Isa.14:32), God loves it, and God has
spoken gloriously of it (Isa.2:2-4;4:2-6;28:16). Verse 4 Rahab. Stands for
Egypt. In the Millennium all will be citizens (born) of the kingdom.
Psalm
87 :1-7
He has set his foundation on the holy
mountain; the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of
Jacob. Glorious things are said of you O city of God: “ I will record Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge me—Philistia too, and Tyre, along with
Cush—and will say, ‘ This one was born in Zion.’” (vv.1-4).
Indeed, of Zion it will be said, “ This one
and that one were born in her, and the Most High himself will establish her.”
The Lord will write in the register of the peoples “ This one was born in
Zion.” As they make music they will sing, “ All my fountains are in you.” (vv.5-7).
