Introduction to the letter of Paul of Titus
Authorship - Some
have questioned whether Paul himself wrote these letters, on the grounds that:
(1) Paul’s travels described in the pastorals don’t fit anywhere into the
historical account of the book of Acts;(2) the church organization described in
them is that of the second century (3) the vocabulary and style are
significantly different from that of the other Pauline letters. Those who hold
to the Pauline authorship reply that: (1) there is no compelling reason to
believe that Acts contains the complete history of the life of Paul. Since his
death is not recorded in Acts, he was apparently released from his first
imprisonment in Rome, traveled over the empire for several years) perhaps even
to Spain), was rearrested, imprisoned a second time in Rome, and martyred under
Nero, (2) Nothing in the church organization cannot be decided solely on the
basis of vocabulary, without considering how subject matter affects a writer’s
choice of words. Vocabulary used to describe church organization, for instance,
would be expected to be different from that used to teach the doctrine of the
Holy Spirit. There is no argument against Pauline authorship that does not have
a reasonable answer. And, of course, the letters themselves claim to have been
written by Paul.
Historical
Background – The probable order of significant
events is : (1) Paul was released from his house arrest in Rome (where we find
him at the end of Acts), probably because his accusers did not choose to press
their charges against him before Caesar (Act14:1;28:30). Their case, therefore,
was lost by default, and Paul was freed. (2) Paul visited Ephesus, left Timothy
there to supervise the churches, and went on to Macedonia (northern Greece).
(3) From there he wrote 1 Timothy (1Tim.1:3). (4) He visited Crete, left Titus
there to supervise those churche3s, and went to Nicopolis in Achaia (southern
Greece, Titus3:12). (5) Either from Macedonia or Nicopolis, he wrote this
letter to encourage Titus. (6) He visited Troas (2Tim.4:13), where he was
suddenly arrested, taken to Rome, imprisoned, and finally behead. (7) From
Rome, during this second imprisonment, he wrote 2 Timothy
Titus- A Gentile by birth (Gal.2:3), Titus was converted through
the ministry of Paul (Titus1:4). He accompanied Paul to Jerusalem at the time
of the apostolic council (Acts15:2; Gal.2:1-3). He was Paul’s emissary to the
church at Corinth during the third missionary journey (2 Cor.7:6-7;8:6). Titus
and two others took the letter we call 2 Corinthians to Corinth and urged the
Corinthians to make good their promise to give to the poor in Jerusalem. Paul
left Titus in Crete to use his administrative gifts to consolidate the work
there. Artemas or Tychicus probably relieved Titus in Crete so he could join
Paul in Nicopolis (Titus3:12), from where Paul sent him to Dalmatia (Yugoslavia)
(2 Tim.4:10). Tradition says he returned to Crete and died there.
Contents – Important topics discussed in the letter include:
qualifications for elders (1:5-9), instructions to various age groups (2:1-8),
relationship to government (3:1-2), and the relation of regeneration to human
works and to the Spirit. (3:5)
Chapter 1 Greetings, Elders in the
church qualifications, offenders in the church
1 Paul, a servant of
God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and
the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
2 In hope of eternal
life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
3 But hath in due
times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me
according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
4 To Titus, mine own
son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and
the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.
5 For this cause left
I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting,
and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
6 If any be blameless,
the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or
unruly.
7 For a bishop must be
blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to
wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
8 But a lover of
hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
9 Holding fast the
faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine
both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
10 For there are many
unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
11 Whose mouths must
be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for
filthy lucre's sake.
12 One of themselves,
even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts,
slow bellies.
13 This witness is
true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
14 Not giving heed to
Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
15 Unto the pure all
things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing
pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
16 They profess that
they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient,
and unto every good work reprobate.

『這些人的口必須堵住;他們為了卑鄙的利益,將不當教導的事教導人,就傾覆了人的全家。』多一11
『有革哩底人中間的一位,就是他們自己的申言者,曾說,革哩底人常是說謊的,乃是惡獸,又饞又懶。』多一12
『這個見證是真的;為這緣故,你要嚴厲的責備他們,使他們在信仰上健康,』多一13

『對潔淨的人,凡物都潔淨;但對污穢不信的人,甚麼都不潔淨,反而連他們的心思和良心,也都污穢了。』多一15

Chapter 2 Operation of the church:
duties of the Minister; living in response to God’s grace
1 But speak thou the things which
become sound doctrine:
2 That the aged men be
sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
3 The aged women likewise,
that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given
to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the
young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste,
keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be
not blasphemed.
6 Young men likewise
exhort to be sober minded.
7 In all things shewing
thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity,
sincerity,
8 Sound speech, that
cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed,
having no evil thing to say of you.
9 Exhort servants to be obedient
unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering
again;
10 Not purloining, but
shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour
in all things.
11 For the grace of God that
bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that,
denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and
godly, in this present world;
13 Looking for that blessed hope,
and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14 Who gave himself for us, that he
might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people,
zealous of good works.
15 These things speak, and exhort,
and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

『勸奴僕要凡事服從自己的主人,討他們的喜歡,不可頂撞他們,』多二9
『不可私拿東西,卻要顯為絕對優良可信,好使我們救主神的教訓在凡事上都得光榮。』多二10
『因為神救萬人的恩典,已經顯現出來,』多二11
『教導我們棄絕不敬虔和屬世的情慾,好在今世過自守、公義、敬虔的生活,』多二12
『等候那有福的盼望,就是至大的神和我們的救主,耶穌基督之榮耀的顯現。』多二13
『祂為我們捨了自己,要贖我們脫離一切的不法,並潔淨我們,歸祂自己成為獨特的子民,作祂特有的產業,熱心行善。』多二14
『這些事你要講說,也要用各等權柄勸勉人、責備人;不可叫人輕看你。』多二15
Chapter 3 Demonstration of good
works, in relation to all people, to false teachers
1 Put them in mind to be subject to
principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
2 To speak evil of no man, to be no
brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
3 For we ourselves also were
sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures,
living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
4 But after that the kindness and
love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs
according to the hope of eternal life.
8 This is a faithful saying, and
these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed
in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and
profitable unto men.
9 But avoid foolish questions, and
genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are
unprofitable and vain.
10 A man that is an heretick after
the first and second admonition reject;
11 Knowing that he that is such is
subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
12 When I shall send Artemas unto
thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have
determined there to winter.
13 Bring Zenas the lawyer and
Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.
14 And let ours also learn to
maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
15 All that are with me salute thee.
Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

『因為我們從前也是無知、悖逆、受迷惑的,給各樣的私慾和宴樂作奴僕,將生命時光耗費於惡毒和嫉妒,是可恨的,又是彼此相恨。』多三3

『但要遠避愚拙的辯論、家譜、爭競、以及因律法而起的爭論,因為這些都是無益虛妄的。』多三9
『分門結黨的人,警戒過一兩次,就要拒絕;』多三10
『知道這等人已經深入歧途,雖定自己的罪,仍是犯罪。』多三11
『我打發亞提馬或推基古到你那裏去的時候,你要趕緊往尼哥波立去見我,因為我已經定意在那裏過冬。』多三12
『你要趕緊給律法師西納和亞波羅送行,叫他們沒有缺乏。』多三13
『並且我們的人也要學習作正經事業,好應必需,免得不結果子。』多三14
『同我在一起的眾人都問你安。請代問那些因信愛我們的人安。願恩典與你們眾人同在。』多三15
